The Xbox Adaptive Joystick comes packed with impressive functionality in a compact form factor:

  1. Seven customizable buttons including four customizable button inputs on the front, an Xbox thumbstick, plus a shoulder and trigger button on the back.
  2. Full customization available through the Xbox Accessories app.
  3. Single-handed operation with options for mounting on surfaces or using with “non-hand body parts.”
  4. Broad compatibility with Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, the Xbox Adaptive Controller, and Windows 11.
  5. Wired connection via USB port for reliable performance.

The joystick can be used as a standalone device plugged directly into a PC or Xbox’s USB port, or it can be connected to an Xbox Adaptive Controller for enhanced accessibility options.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Accessible Gaming

The release of the Xbox Adaptive Joystick aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing mission to make gaming accessible to all players, including the estimated 425 million gamers with disabilities worldwide. The announcement was made during Microsoft’s 15th annual Ability Summit, highlighting the company’s dedication to inclusive technology. Microsoft also published its Accessible Packaging Design Guide, which offers practical guidelines, best practices and strategies to create accessible packaging and foster a trusted customer experience.

This new joystick was developed following extensive research and first-hand testing with players with disabilities, addressing a long-standing request from the community for an affordable option to use with either the Adaptive Controller or a regular Xbox controller. At $29.99, it’s significantly more affordable than the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which retails for $99.99.

Availability

Microsoft initially announced the Xbox Adaptive Joystick in August 2024, promising availability in early 2025. True to their word, the device is now available for purchase exclusively through the Microsoft Store, expanding their accessibility lineup and further demonstrating their commitment to inclusive gaming experiences.

This release represents another milestone in Microsoft’s journey to create gaming experiences that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of physical limitations, and sets a new standard for accessible gaming peripherals in the industry.
